Body recovered from C&O canal waters in Georgetown

Georgetown, Washington authorities are investigating after the grisly discovery of a human body in a local canal Friday afternoon.

DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department Vito Maggiolo said that rescuers rushed to the C&O Canal at around 2:30 p.m. over a report of a deceased person in waters.

Once there, they pronounced the person dead and pulled the body out of the canal between 33rd and 34th Streets NW.

  • Officers with the Metropolitan Police Department blocked the streets and set up a tent on the towpath of a mule bridge as they gathered evidence.

    The body was moved to a vehicle parked in the nearby Francis Scott Key Park.

    An eyewitness said that the body appeared to be a white man but officials did not release further information about the decedent.
