Kenyan authorities reported Wednesday that a US Embassy head security official had taken his own life at a Nairobi hotel room and left a suicide note near him.
The identity of the 58-year-old man was not immediately released pending his next-of-kin notification but police believe he had committed suicide.
“The body was found hanging near the room window. He seemed to have died long before the security team arrived there,” a source told reporters.
The decedent had arrived in Kenya two weeks ago and had been quarantining at the hotel. They said that they grew worried about him when he did not report back to his job or answered their calls.
“We can confirm the death of a U.S. government employee. U.S. Embassy Nairobi extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased,” a U.S. Embassy spokesman confirmed.
Investigators are verifying the authenticity of the suicide note as an autopsy is being performed.
