Despite Covid-positive diagnosis: Federal inmate executed in Terre Haute, another scheduled tonight

The last two federal death row inmates to be executed by Trump’s administration have both recently tested positive for the coronavirus.

But the US Supreme Court rejected their lawyers’ bid to halt the executions until their recovery, a request that was also supported by US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan.

Subsequently, Terre Haute, Indiana officials put 52-year-old Corey Johnson to death late Thursday for his roles in seven murders that took place in Virginia, nearly 30 years ago.

  • “I am OK. I am at peace,” were Johnson’s last words. Shortly before being injected with lethal pentobarbital, he apologized for his acts and said that he “was not the same man that I was.”

    He spoke about his last meal, a pizza, and a strawberry milkshake, which was “wonderful” but regretted not getting the “jelly-filled doughnuts” he ordered.

    Dustin Higgs is scheduled for execution tonight despite him having the coronavirus. He was convicted of overseeing the slaughtering of three Maryland women in 1996.
