Police said one suspect died and another was injured in an officer-involved shooting early Christmas morning in San Jose.

San Jose police Sgt. Enrique Garcia said officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Story Rd. and Clemence Ave. at about 2:09 a.m.

Officers tried to stop a car, which had previously been reported stolen, but the woman driving it allegedly took off to lead a chase on city streets and the freeway, he said. She ended up hitting a chain-link fence at Leigh and Fruitdale avenues near Sherman Oaks Elementary School, police said.

The suspect driver maneuvered back and forth to free the vehicle from the chain-link and then drove at officers, ramming a patrol vehicle.

At that point, four officers opened fire. The driver and passenger were struck by gunfire.

Garcia said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene and a female passenger was treated for wounds and will be booked into jail. No officers were hurt.

Garcia said the officers would be placed on paid leave while the case is investigated by the Police Department and the Santa Clara County district attorney’s office.
