Two Chicago police officers have been hit and killed by a commuter train while chasing a shooting suspect on Monday evening.

Eduardo Marmolejo, 37, and Conrad Gary, 31, were responding to an alert about gunshots in Chicago's south side. The two officers pursued a gunman who had headed towards railway tracks when they were fatally struck at about 6:20 p.m. by a commuter train on the line which runs between northern Indiana and Chicago. The shooting suspect was later arrested.

Officer Marmolejo had been with police for two-and-a-half-years while officer Gary had served for 18 months.

Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel said the city had lost “two young men, both fathers with young families”.
