A 19-year-old teen was arrested for driving under influence, a young mother was killed in the crash Monday.

Police said Erick Hernandez was driving the wrong way before he crashed in the 1500 block of College Avenue, court records show. He hit an oncoming black SUV - with a mother, grandmother and 1-year-old inside.

The driver of the pickup is believed to have been intoxicated just before 3:30 a.m.

the child and the child’s grandmother were taken to a hospital, where they were listed in stable condition. the 23-year-old mother died on the scene.

the pickup truck was seen driving down the street as other vehicles were trying to avoid it. The truck then sideswipes the SUV.

Erick Hernandez admitted to drinking a few beers, but "based on his field sobriety tests, it was a lot more than a few," said Sean Teare, head of the Vehicular Crimes Division at the Harris County District Attorney's Office.

Authorities have information on where he was drinking and will investigate further, Teare said.

"Obviously, at 19 he shouldn't be drinking anywhere," he said.

Hernandez is now in custody and faces intoxication manslaughter charges, officials said.
