A 55-year-old South Dakota man who has stabbed his younger brother to death when he was impaired will spend 10 years of his life behind bars with three years suspended.

In December, James Ladeaux entered a guilty plea to second-degree manslaughter and confessed to killing his brother, Fred, on March 18 amid a heated argument during which, he was heavily drunk. He was sentenced Friday by Judge Jane Wipf-Pfeifle.

According to Rapid City outlets, Police found Fred Ladeaux dead in an alley. James was sitting near him crying and holding a knife. A bottle of vodka was also found at the scene.

“This is what happens when we have drugs and alcohol and we carry weapons,” the judge said as she addressed James.
