A Georgia daycare worker has been ordered to serve the rest of her life in jail after the family of her victim appealed the case in which she had initially been sentenced to 10 years.

51-year-old Maria Owens was convicted of several charges that include murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and cruelty to children in connection to the 2011 murder of 11-month-old Jaylen Kelly who was beaten to death three days before his birthday.

Prosecutors said that the victim’s parents told Owens, who ran an unlicensed daycare, that they would no longer leave their children in her structure. The furious woman then beat Jaylen so hard that he lost half his blood volume and suffered a broken back.

On Friday, Owens was sentenced to life behind bars after an initial sentence has been appealed.
