Texas authorities said that an airman has fatally shot himself during a gunfight with police.
The unidentified airman was from the Air Force Base in Texas. He was reportedly trying to commit suicide when police intervened to stop him.
When responding officers arrived at the airman's house on the city's south side following the Dyess Air Force Base reports, they knocked at his door. Abilene Police Chief Stan Standridge said that the man came out armed with a rifle and a handgun. He reportedly pointed the rifle at a responding officer and was subsequently shot by a SWAT supervisor who tried to stop the attack.
The airman then ran away from the scene and shot himself in nearby bushes.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released.
