A drunk driver shot himself to death during traffic stop in Boulder County.

A drunk man shot and killed himself during a traffic stop in Lyons on Friday evening.

Boulder County officials responded to a report of a drunk driver near North St. Vrain Road and Apple Valley Road around 7:30 p.m.

Cmdr. Mike Wagner said a deputy pulled over the suspect vehicle near Second Avenue and Evans Street in Lyons a short time later.

during the interaction, the driver pulled a handgun and put it to his head, threatening to shoot himself, deputies tried to negotiate with the man, but he wasn’t responsive to their attempts. Mid-negotiation, and unannounced, he shot himself.

the man was given medical aid but in vain as he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office dispatched detectives to the scene, and the Boulder County Coroner’s Office also responded.
