A nine-year-old New Mexican boy caught a 42-pound catfish this weekend after fighting for several minutes.

Alex Flores, from Las Cruces, went fishing on November 10 with his father, Kris, at the Elephant Butte Reservoir, when he caught the blue catfish.

I am a fisherman since the age of 6 months. When I had my son, I also took him out of the water when he was very young, "said Kris Flores at Las Cruces Sun-News.

Alex, a fourth grade student, named the fish Wailord after a Pokemon character.

The fish was released after taking pictures and videos.

He said it was his policy to release any fish weighing more than 10 pounds.

According to the New Mexico News Port, the largest blue catfish ever caught at Elephant Butte weighed 78 pounds and was four feet long.
