A Florida woman faces animal cruelty charges after nearly drowning her cat, police said.

Edgewater police reported receiving a call about a woman who had harmed her cat. When they arrived, they found 37-year-old Amanda Goodwin in a drainage culvert "holding a cat in obvious distress".

The Daytona Beach newspaper reported that Goodwin and the cat were both wet and muddy.

Goodwin told the police that her cat, "Hubble" was hot and was just trying to give her some water after the pair was locked out of her grandmother's house, the outlet said.

A witness who spoke to Goodwin told the officers that she did not make much sense.

Hubble was taken to the Edgewater pet shop. He is not suspected of having permanent injuries.

Goodwin was charged with animal cruelty and taken to Volusia County Jail after being evaluated by a firefighting operation on site for chest pain, reported the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
