A Californian neurosurgeon accused of alleged crimes related to the sexuality of children was found dead Sunday morning in his prison cell in an alleged suicide.

James Kohut, 59, was found alone in his cell in Santa Cruz County Jail when breakfast service began at 5:45 am, the sheriff's office at the Santa Cruz Sentinel said.

Kohut did not have a cell mate and was detained in the prison's protection unit, the newspaper reported.

The preliminary investigation by a medical examiner suggests that Kohut killed himself, KSBW-TV reported. An autopsy was scheduled this week.

Kohut was arrested in May 2017 for multiple charges of child sexual abuse.

Two women, former nurse Rashel Brandon and Emily Stephens, have also been charged in this case, the Sentinel newspaper reported. The children of the two women, allegedly described as Kohut's friends, were among the alleged victims.

Prosecutors have alleged that Kohut has abused children for more than two decades, according to the channel.
