Juan Martinez Lopes, 39, was arrested last month and charged with rape and kidnapping after allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl in 2002, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, described as a random act.

Lopes was charged with raping the girl in a field in Santa Rosa and raping her again after catching her after escaping and attempting to escape, Sgt. Juan Valencia said.

The girl was able to break free a second time, said Valencia. "She hid inside an unlocked vehicle nearby until Lopes left. Then she found a phone and called for help, "he said.

He added that Lopes was identified as a suspect when the teenager took him out of a series of photos.

Lopes then took off for Mexico and an arrest warrant was issued against him, said the sergeant.

Valencia stated that the evidence obtained from the forensic examination of the victim linked Lopes to the crime.
