Alaska earthquake:weighing up the damage.

A major 7.0 magnitude earthquake has struck Alaska, causing people to run from buildings and briefly prompting a tsunami alert for coastal areas.

The massive quakes on Friday knocked off goods from the shelves of markets, broke the windows of stores, cracked a two stories building, disrupted electrical service and disabled traffic lights, snarling traffic.

fortunately, the quake did not cause any deaths or injuries.

The earthquake was reported at 08.29 local times (17.29 GMT), the USGS added. One of the more powerful aftershocks that followed minutes later had a magnitude of 5.7.

a scenic route that runs northeast of the city had "completely disappeared." according to Anchorage Police Chief Justin Doll.
