Jeffrey Epstein hanged himself in his lower Manhattan jail cell, he was found with a bed sheet wrapped around his neck and set on top of a bunk bed, the newspaper learned.
The convicted pedophile apparently killed himself by kneeling near the ground and strangling himself with an improvised slipknot, a police source said Monday.
Epstein was "insensitive" when he was found in his cell of the special unit of the Metropolitan Correction Center around 18:30, announced the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Staff members tried to resuscitate him and took him to an infirmary inside the closed room, then transported by ambulance to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Lower Manhattan, where he was pronounced dead.
The FBI and the Department of Justice are both investigating the incident.
Barr also promised that the authorities were "getting to the bottom of things," saying the lawsuit against Epstein was "very important to the Department of Justice and to me personally."
