A South Carolina jury has sent Timothy Jones Jr. to death row for the murder of his five children, but it is unclear when or even if the father will be executed.
After executing 18 prisoners from 2000 to 2010, South Carolina has not killed anyone since May 2011.
South Carolina does not send defendants to the death row.
Other states observe similar trends. Virginia has only three detainees on death row. Oklahoma executed 112 prisoners from 1990.
