The sailor's daughter photographed kissing a woman in Times Square while people were celebrating the end of the World War, said her father had died at the age of 95. She announced that her father, George Mendonsa had a seizure on Sunday after falling in a shelter in Middleton, Rhode Island.
In the famous image, one of the four taken by Alfred Eisenstadt for Life magazine, Mendonsa is seen with ecstasy and embracing a woman in a white nurse's uniform.
The photo was published by Life under the title "V-J Day in Times Square".
Mendonsa, had long claimed to be the sailor in the photo, but this has only been confirmed recently with the use of facial recognition technology.
Greta Zimmer Friedman, the woman pictured, passed away in 2016 at the age of 92.
