NYPD veteran killed by friendly fire amid shootout with robbery suspect

The New York Police Department expressed their condolences and deep thoughts to the family of a 19-year police veteran who was fatally shot during a fire exchange with an armed robbery suspect on Tuesday.

Detective Brian Simonsen, 42, was in plainclothes working on another robbery case nearby when he was alerted of the T-Mobile confrontation with the 27-year-old suspect who entered in a chaotic shootout with police officers. Simonsen was shot several times in the chest. He was rushed to a hospital by a squad car but did not survive his injuries.

The robbery suspect was identified as Christopher Ramson. He was hospitalized after sustaining wounds and is currently in stable condition.
