Young California hiker found dead at base of Boney Mountain Wilderness cliff

A 22-year-old California hiker was found dead at the base of a cliff at the Boney Mountain State Wilderness Thursday.

Zachary Zernik is believed to have died following an accidental fall, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office said.

“It is with great sadness we report that at about 9:00 a.m., Zachary Zernik was located deceased in the Boney Mountain State Wilderness Park,” the department said in a statement.

    “The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office pending an autopsy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones.”

    Zernik went missing over the weekend and failed to show up for work. He was last seen alive Saturday morning.
