An Akron University sophomore basketball player has pleaded not guilty of the assault of his teammate at practice on Dec. 16.

Khadim Gueye was arrested this week for allegedly punching a teammate, knocking out some teeth and leaving him unconscious. He has been charged with misdemeanor assault in Ohio.

The 22-year-old player from Senegal was suspended. Coach John Groce said that he will let the process take its course and wouldn't comment more in order to respect the players' privacy.

The injured player Mark Kostelac missed two games but returned to play late December.

The redshirt center suspect was transferred from South Carolina and is sitting out this season. He and his attorney refused to comment at his arraignment Friday.
